I had the pleasure of sitting down with multidisciplinary artist, textile designer, and author Malene Barnett whose roots trace back to St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica. Malene has always been surrounded by creativity. Coming from a “long line of makers”, she was naturally drawn to working with her hands. Her artistic journey led her to textile design, community building, and now authorship with her book Crafted Kinship: Inside the Creative Practices of Contemporary Black Caribbean Makers.
In our conversation, Malene shares how growing up in a culturally rich Caribbean household influenced her path. She also reflects on her early experiences as a young artist, from sketching portraits to discovering her passion for rug and textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Why Preserving Our Stories Matters
One of the most powerful takeaways from this episode is the importance of cultural preservation. Malene highlights how art is a form of storytelling—one that connects us to our roots and ensures that traditions are not lost. Her book, Crafted Kinship, is a beautiful example of this, bringing together contemporary Caribbean and diaspora artists to celebrate their work and experiences.
As Caribbean people, our stories are vast and diverse, yet deeply interconnected. Through oral traditions, textiles, and visual art, we continue to shape and redefine what it means to be Caribbean in the world today.
