Improved Rating System for Caribbean Representation in TV & Film

As Caribbean stories and voices continue to gain visibility on global platforms, it’s crucial to have a rating system that honors both cultural depth and entertainment quality. Originally, Reels & Riddims identified Accent, Character Development, and Storyline as essential elements to evaluate the authenticity and quality of Caribbean representation in media. Now, we’re excited to introduce a more comprehensive, five-part rating system to deepen these assessments and bring focus to elements that amplify the Caribbean experience.

Reels & Riddims 5-Category Rating System

  1. Accent – This remains one of our core criteria, as accents are essential to authentic Caribbean representation. Here, we look at the accuracy and effort behind the characters’ accents, scoring from 1 (least authentic) to 5 (most authentic).
  2. Character Depth – We’re combining character development with cultural nuances to create a more nuanced assessment. We’ll evaluate how well characters are developed beyond stereotypes, scoring based on their complexity and authenticity to the Caribbean experience.
  3. Storyline & Impact – This new category blends plot depth with cultural significance, looking at how engaging and impactful the storyline is while assessing its contribution to Caribbean representation. Projects will be rated on how well they elevate Caribbean culture and perspectives.
  4. Visual Authenticity & Cinematography – In this category, we assess the authenticity and cultural accuracy of settings of the specific Caribbean neighborhood/city (diaspora) or country.
  5. Music & Sound – Music is at the heart of Caribbean culture, so it’s important to consider the soundtrack. We rate projects on whether the music is both culturally resonant and enriching to the story.

With this updated system, we aim to provide a clearer, more insightful view of Caribbean representation across media.
