Roots, Rock, Reggae, Souls: A Cultural Exploration
In this Carry On Friends, Style & Vibes and Reels & Riddims joint episode, Mikelah and I sit down with Jessica Shaw, a talented Jamaican American TV producer. Jessica is the director of the upcoming documentary, Roots, Rock, Reggae, Souls which explores Jamaica’s love for “souls” – which has received an overwhelming response on social media.
What is Souls? It’s one of the things the documentary hopes to explore. However, generally “souls” is a catchall term Jamaicans use for music from a variety of genres, including country, R&B, pop, ballads and soft rock. Jessica story begins in Kingston, where her love for souls was cultivated through her nightly ritual of listening to Jamaica’s Fame FM. The station’s “souls” segment played a variety of genres, including country, pop, and soft rock, all. This eclectic mix of music has had a lasting impact on her, inspiring her to create a documentary that delves into these unique cultural practices.
Jessica shares her excitement about the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for the documentary, “Roots, Rock, Reggae, Souls.” She discusses the creative social media strategies they are using to engage supporters, including themed days like “Celine MeMe Monday” and “Trivia Tuesday.” Jessica also highlights the unique rewards for those who donate, such as curated playlists and mixtapes. The call to action is clear: support the documentary by sharing and donating to the campaign.
In summary, this episode is a rich, engaging exploration of Jamaican music and culture. From the unexpected connections between musical genres to the power of cultural storytelling, this episode is a celebration of music and culture.
