The Journey of a Change Maker Camir Ricketts on Carry On Friends

The Journey of a Change Maker

In this episode I chat and laugh with Camir Ricketts about his journey from Jamaica to Atlanta to New York and all the work he is doing now – an ardent advocate for science and innovation and an even greater advocate for the development of all of the Caribbean.

Who is Camir Ricketts?

Camir is a proud alumnus of the Herbert Morrison Technical High School in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He is now a PhD candidate in Computational Biology and Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in Manhattan, New York where studies cancer genomics. Camir has used his time at Weill Cornell to not only focus on his PhD but also impact the institution’s commitment to diversity. He served as president of the Tri-Minority Society where he used the position to empower the minority students on campus and provide them with a sense of community. He also organized and executed the now annual summer research program that affords Caribbean and other minority college students without research experience the opportunity to do scientific research at Cornell over the summer. He also sits on the diversity council of Weill Cornell Medicine and has been instrumental in new initiatives. He also started, alongside the Office of Student Diversity, Weill Cornell’s first minority mentorship program, the Esprit de Corp program.

He is also the founder of the MindsOf Initiative which launched their ‘Minds Of Jamaica’ mentorship platform in 2019. Minds Of Jamaica provides access to career mentorship for Jamaicans across the island. Camir Ricketts is also recipient of the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Excellence in 2018.

With a passion to share his story and his work with others, Camir has given talks at the University of the West Indies, as well as various conferences in the USA and Europe.
