Intentional Caribbean Parenting for a Different Generation
In this episode we discuss Caribbean parenting during a pandemic and how generational influences impact our children with Crucian born Dr. Anne-Louise Lockhart, a pediatric psychologist, author, parent coach and speaker.
Dr. Lockhart discussed the importance of intentional parenting and how our parents and grandparents’ parenting styles ( though beneficial ) weren’t applicable to this generation.
She spoke about the importance of encouraging our children to have a voice, the development of emotional intelligence and the ability to problem solve; all through encouraging, supportive, empathic dialogue.
Dr. Lockhart touched on the importance of play. Intentional, uninterrupted play and how this assists with our childrens’ feelings of being in control. As well as attending to what their emotions are saying. She broke down the steps of emotional coaching, which is to listen, reflect, empathize, validate, problem solving and collaboration and its effectiveness in all relationships.
